General Issues
I don't have 'textThing PLUS'. My pack is called 'textThing' or 'Sherlock'
'textThing' is an older version of 'textThing PLUS', and 'Sherlock' came out way before 'textThing'. We no longer support 'Sherlock' and 'textThing' can be difficult to get going on XP - and even more so on Vista. You need to upgrade to 'textThingPLUS'. Mail us for a quote.
During installation on XP I get: 'Cannot create file C:\windows\msagent\chars\jack.acs'
You're not installing 'textThing PLUS', but a much older version called 'textThing'. You need to upgrade to 'textThingPLUS'. Mail us for a quote.
During installation on XP I get ' Cannot create file C:\windows\system32\comdlg32.ocx ' or similar
The CD is trying to update a file called 'comdlg32.ocx' which is either in use by another program or 'read only'. The best time to install any software is immediately after the PC has started. Make sure that you shut down all applications including the ones in the system tray (bottom right). Alternatively, try installing in 'safe mode'.
On XP I get a ' runtime ' error which mentions a missing or invalid file
This is caused by an update to Windows XP that changed the way the System directory is reported. Basically the files are being installed to the wrong location. A patch is available here that installs the missing files and should resolve the issue. Alternatively (the preferred option), mail us for the latest CD which includes this fix. (Proof of purchase may be required.)
On Vista I get a 'runtime' error about an incorrectly registered file, e.g. error 339/ocx, component picclp32.ocx missing or invalid
Please read the Vista section in General problems with installation or launching
I don't know how to create and load my own texts
This is all in the Handbook. Look in your Start menu for the icon that launches the program - the PDF should be in there too. If it's not, either re-install the software or (4.99 Mb), and go to page 50.
